Poker Glossary

Action - These are exciting poker matches with a lot of action plays. Many times these games have many players involved. The game play is quick and exciting. Bets, raises, calls and folds are constantly being places. The pot is usually large and grows rapidly.

All In - When a player puts all of their money or chips into the pot. This can be a risky move, players must be very confident with the hands they are holding.

American Airlines - A great hand, two aces of any suit.

Ante - Cash, money, chips or other items placed in the pot before the game starts.

Bad Beat - A bad beat is when another player beats an amazing hand. For example, player one has a flush and decided to go all in. Then player 2 goes all in as well and pulls out a royal flush and wins the entire pot. Player one is left with nothing and left with a beat bad with a great hand.

Bank Roll - All the money a player has set aside to play poker. It is important to have a specific set budget.

Big Blind - Required amount of money placed in the pot before the game begins. There are a few games which posting a big blind is not necessary.

Blank - A card that does not affect any of the players, also known as a rag.

Blind - Required bets at the beginning of the game that must be placed by the two players to the dealers left. The blind changes and moves to the left after every single hand. The blinds are posted before the dealer hands out any cards. These blinds are placed in order to assist the pot in growing. This is basically making a bet in the dark.

Bluff - This is faking others into believing you have a bigger hand than you really do. Placing large bets to trick the other players into folding.

Boat - Slang for a full house.

Bust - When a player looses control of their hand or bankroll.

Buy In - The minimum amount of cash or chips needed to start a game. The amount needed to start the game. The buy in must be placed before players are able to sit at the poker table.

Call - When a player matches the previous players bet. If the player decides not to call or raise, they must fold and take themselves out of them game.

Cap - This only happens in a few styles of poker games. Does not pertain to no-limit hands. The cap is when the highest number of bets has been places and additional bids are not allowed. Each round has a specific amount of bets that can be placed before they are capped.

Chameleon - A player who changes his style often. May be aggressive on hand and passive the next.

Check - An action a player takes when they do not want to call, bet, or fold. Checking is totally free. Many times they check when they don’t have any decent cards. Also when they are curious about what cards the other players are holding. They may want to trap another player into folding or not paying attention to their move.

Dead Man’s Hand - A very famous hand. It is aces and eights and is popularly known as the hand Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was murdered. This match took place in the famous town of Deadwood.

Ducks - A pair of twos, any suit. Also known as duces.

Fish - An inexperienced player who plays poorly.

Fifth Street - The last card drawn in Texas hold ‘em and Stud poker. Also known as the river card. The fifth street is also the last chance to place a bet.

Flop - The first three cards shown by the dealer in Texas hold ‘em. These are also the community cards and can be used by everyone involved in the hand.

Flush - Five cards, which are all of the same suite. A flush is a very powerful hand.

Fold - When a player removes themselves from the game and pulls out of the pot.

Fourth Street - The fourth community card dealt in stud of Texas hold ‘em. This is also the fourth chance to bet.

Full House - A good card hand consisting of two cards of the same rank as well as three other cards of a different rank. For example, three jacks and two kings.

High Society - The highest amount of chips in a specific

Hole Card - These are each players own, individual cards. They are the cards dealt to you by the dealer and no one else can or should see these cards.

Inside Straight Draw - This is four cards which are paired with two more cards to create a full flush.

Kicker Card - The card that decides the winner in the event of a tie. The kicker card is usually the lowest hole card in your hand.

Ladies- Nickname for two queens.

Lay Down - Term for folding.

Lead - The first player to make a bet in the pot. The lead is usually the winner or person with the highest hand.

Limit Poker - A type of poker game which has a set determined betting structure. Limit poker also has a set amount of raises that may be made.

Limp or Limper - When a player enters the lowest amount during the first round of betting. The first player who calls a bet.

Lock - A poker hand which is highly expected to win at least a portion of the pot.

Loose - A player who may be inexperienced or play many hands. This is a style of poker which is hard to master and on used by few. A loose game is when many of the players bet this way.

Maniac - An interesting player, who bets often, raises frequently and enters more pots than most players. Known for their aggressive playing style.

Muck - To throw away a hand that is undesirable. Also a term for a pile of cards which can be thrown away.

Monster - A great hand in poker and expected to win. This term is also used in poker tournaments for a player who accumulates a large amount of chips quickly.

No Limit - A poker game which players can bet as much as they desire. Also well known as table stakes.

Nuts - The best possible hand in the game of poker. This hand is guaranteed to win and can’t be beat.

One Pair - A popular hand rank which is two cards of the same exact ranks. For example, two aces is a pair.

Open Ended Straight - A draw which is four consecutive cards, which can make a straight with one more matching card. For example 5,6,7,8 or 2,3,4,5.

Outs - The amount of cards which are left in the deck that can create a favorable hand.

Over the Top - To raise a huge bet.

Pocket Cards - The two cards dealt during Texas hold ‘em which other players are not allowed to view.

Pocket Rockets - An excellent pair of cards in the game of Texas hold ‘em, a pair of aces.

Position - Where the player is sitting in relationship to where the dealer is placed. Also the relationship of the others placement with each other.

Pot - All of the placed chips, bets and money make up the pot. The ultimate goal of poker is to win the pot and all that is inside it.

Quads - Four cards of the same exact rank, four of a kind. A 4 of spades, 4 of hearts, 4 of diamonds, 4 of clubs.

Rack - 100 poker chips in stacks of five worth $20 a piece.

Raise - The action of adding more chips, cash or bets to the pot to increase the size. This also increases the bet.

Re-buy - The amount of money a player invests to buy more chips, to continue playing.

Ring Game - A normal, live game which is not a tournament.

River - This is the last card dealt in all games. Also known as 5th street in hold ‘em and Omaha. In Stud poker it is called 7th street.

Rock - A very quiet, passive, tight player. Most of the time these players fold and are very cautious about the way the play. They do not place bets frequently and wait for the perfect hand or chance to win big.

Scoop - This is when a player wins the entire pot and it is not divided with any other players.

Semi Bluff - When a player makes a large bet with an undesirable hand. This is a very risky and sometimes dangerous way to play.

Seven Card Stud - A very popular and well known poker game when players are dealt two cards face down, and then dealt a card face up. They are dealt 7 cards total. The winner is determined by the player with the best 5 out of 7 cards.

Showdown - This happens when two or more players are left and the pot is still to be decided. The players turn over their cards and the player with the best hand will win.

Small Blind - The amount of money placed in the pot by the player sitting directly left of the dealer. This is usually half of the big blind or can be made bigger.

Stack - The players specific amount of chips in their possession.

Straight - Five cards which are consecutive and from the same exact suit.

Stud Games - One of the many types of popular poker games. In Stud poker some of the cards are show and some are hidden. None of the players share or see each others cards. It truly is a game of mystery.

Suit - The characteristics of a playing card. If the card is a diamond, spade, heart or club.

Tell - An obvious action or emotion a player emits that blows his cover or bluff. The tell is physical clues that the players show when they receive their cards or are about to place a bet.

Texas hold ‘em - A relatively new and wildly popular poker game where all players are dealt two cards. Rounds of betting proceeds, then three more community cards are dealt. Next another round of betting is done and one more community card is placed on the table. The last round of betting commences and the last card is placed on the table as well as the last round of betting. The player with the best hand wins.

Three of a Kind - Three cards of the same exact face value. For example 8 of spades, 8 of hears and 8 of diamonds.

Tight - A style of poker playing where the player folds frequently. A player who is well disciplined and sticks to his budget. Waits for the perfect moment to place a well thought out bet, which will hopefully help him win the pot.

Tilt - To play badly and lose frequently due to playing in an emotional manner.

Top Pair - When you have the highest pair of cards on the table. Usually happens in a game like Texas hold ‘em.

Trips - Slang for three of a kind.

Turn - The first card turned over during the flop.

Two Pair - A poker hand made up of two pairs of one rank, plus two pairs of another rank.

Up Card - Community cards that are shown. They are dealt face up during stud poker.

Walking Sticks - A pair of 7’s.

W.S.O.P - The world series of poker, which is usually filmed and shown on television.
